In praise of versatile pearls

Canadian royalty, Grand Duchess Olga, pearls, pearls are forever

A smashing rope of pearls with a baroque pearl pendant caught my eye while perusing the news. It turned out to belong to a Romanov grand duchess, who escaped the Russian revolution with the help of her jewel box. According to a fascinating story in the National Post, Olga Alexandrovna, sister of Tsar Nicholas, lived out her last days in Canada, on an Ontario farm, courtesy of that string of pearls. (And many others like it, I’ll wager.)

Her pearls give the term investment dressing a whole new meaning.

Will you look at those pearls!

I’ve said it before; I’ll say it again: pearls are the best buy when building a jewellery wardrobe. You’ll wear them over and over again, all your life: from your wedding, to your business meetings, to parties, to your children’s soccer game. And they’ll still look good on you at your great-grandchildren’s recitals. And let’s not forge that your heirs will be delighted to be reminded of you, generations from now, when the pearls’ timeless beauty will still be fashionable.

Bonus: if worst comes to worst, they’re easy to carry when you’re fleeing the country.

Wedding keepsakes

pearls, shop anne carson

One of the joys of my job is seeing how my pieces become keepsakes.

Brides looking for long-lasting mementoes of the big day often find their way to my workshop, so every year I do a wide range of pearl statement necklaces ideal for finishing a strapless gown on the day or elevating a boring business suit later.

Jewellery really is the one part of your wedding day outfit that you can wear again and again. And freshwater pearls, semi-precious stones, and sterling silver never lose their beauty, so these necklaces will give joy to the next generation of brides too.

Here are a few pieces from my portfolio that graced the necks of bridal parties.

Tomorrow’s heirlooms for today’s bride

heirlooms, pearls, weddings

Brides who believe wedding jewellery should be more than a little disposable sparkle on the day are the ones who find their way to my workshop. They’re often the women for whom family is everything, so they want mementoes of the day that will become tomorrow’s heirlooms.

AnnePearls

Although I didn’t start out with the idea of designing earrings and necklaces for bridal parties – I began by designing jewellery just for myself — I was equally charmed by the idea of creating necklaces that would carry memories.

There’s a design challenge in making a necklace that will outlive today’s wedding dress and become a sentimental piece, reminding a woman of her wedding for the rest of her life. But I soon learned that many women wanted jewellery that could also grace the necks of their daughters and granddaughters, at some future weddings.  So the pieces had to have the timeless quality of classic clothes.

Pink

Of course, my pearl necklaces are frequent choices for brides doing big, white weddings. The versatile ropes can be worn long, as a flapper in a slip dress might wear them. Or they can be styled as chokers or multiple-strand collars, to work with evening dresses or suits.

But I’ve had some unusual requests from modern brides too. One of my favourites came from a bride who was getting married on a tropical beach and wanted jewellery with “beach-y elegance” that would remind her of that day. I mixed London blue topaz and smokey quartz to arrive at the ocean-and-sand colours that would remind her of the setting.

One bride wanted something more modern – a sort of tailored romantic look she could easily wear to her casual workplace. She asked for one of my silver chain necklaces with her own silver charms. The pieces represented things that were meaningful to the couple – where they met, where he proposed. The accent stones were his birthstone and hers. I’ve since added a lovely purple amethyst to the piece, representing their first child.

Real Weddings magazine did a nice feature on my jewellery designed with brides in mind.

They highlight something I’ve noticed about more and more brides: they’re looking for lasting mementos for their wedding.  As the story says, if you choose your jewellery carefully it can be the one part of your wedding outfit that you can wear forever.

A privileged job

When I began designing jewellery I never expected that I would be given a privileged glimpse into people’s private lives. But that is what happens every time I get a new commission.

ImageWhether I’m creating a rope of pearls for a bride who is already planning to give the necklace to the daughter she hopes to have, or earrings for someone to wear to a job interview, I’m fascinated by how many people see jewellery as a talisman. Even for the most practical people I know jewellery is a kind of good luck charm. And it is often worn as something that reminds us of who we are as we go out into the world.

We all know that about wedding rings. We’re wearing our commitment in public and reminding ourselves of our partners. But I see people using necklaces, earrings, and bracelets as to remind themselves of family, friends, hopes, goals, and their happiest moments.

And here I thought I was just making something pretty to jazz up a little black dress.
