Since a pandemic has transported us back a century, I began thinking about how fashion lovers shopped in that era.

Cobblers, milliners, dressmakers, tailors, and jewellers often had ateliers — workshops-with-display shops — where folks like us would buy their clothes, by appointment.

It was both more social and a more private way to shop. So I think a trunk show by-appointment it is just the thing for this moment, as I’m beginning to think of 2020 as 1920 Redux: the year everything old is new again.

1920 Redux: A Trunk Show, by appointment

Saturday, July 25, 2020

Granville Island Hotel

10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

info@annecarsondesign.com

604.619.9294

ACD-N-GreyPearls&amethysts

Four strands of lustrous grey pearls accented with eight tiny pink amethysts, $839

Here’s how it works

Send me a note — info@annecarsondesign.com — or call me — 604.619.9294 — and book a time that suits you, by the quarter hour. Any time from 10 a.m. to 4:15 p.m.

I will stagger the appointments to ensure that there are no more people than the volume of the room can support. But if you want to come at the last minute, on a whim, just call me. If the room is large enough to support another person or two, you’ll be welcome.

Safety first

I’ve heard you when you say that you want to be able to see the jewellery in person and feel its heft or try it on before investing in the necklaces, in particular. And I do think we have to get back to lives as normal as possible, under the circumstances.

I also appreciate all of you sending me those articles about how statement earrings and necklaces are the new office wardrobe essential for Zoom meetings. In order to explain why you must have a trunk show. (Very funny. And thanks for your support!)

acd-e-AquaDrop&tutu

Keep’em guessing in the Zoom meetings with a mismatched aquamarines. The large faceted stone on the left is a substantial 2.5 cm (one inch) and the complementary cluster of aquamarines is the same length, $199

But as a British Columbian who is very proud to see how we managed to limit that virus’s transmission by virtue of good citizenship and cooperation, I want to be careful that we do everything safely.

With that in mind, I’ve booked a large conference room in the hotel, with high ceilings and doors to the outdoors. I’ll keep those open so we have lots of lovely fresh air circulating.

I’ll have plenty of hand sanitizer on hand. And the hotel has washrooms where you can soap up those hands before and after handling the jewellery, should you wish to do that too. There will be disposable masks at the ready, in case you forget your own.

There’s also a new accessory to my wardrobe — a face shield. I’m just trying to decide what sort of necklace looks best with it?

ACD-N-Mask

At first I thought that the strand of silver-gold pyrite with a pendant stamped with the head of Bachhus the god of wine might be just the thing to go with PPE. The necklace is $659

But on second thought, maybe turquoise? It’s such a summery stone. This is a trio of necklaces, call me for the price.

ACD-N-TurquoiseLayer

Not ready for back to the future?

You can still shop online at my website. But many of the more than 80 earring designs in the July 25 trunk show are one-of-a-kind, which means I can’t put the pieces online. It’s just too cruel! I hate having to tell customers that I cannot replicate a piece.

So the one-of-a-kind pieces are the ones that go into the trunk shows.

But this year as a nod to The Plague, I’m posting pieces in the monthly newsletter — sign-up here — and on the blog.

Some of these pieces are available online, as indicated. If it’s not online you can call or email to buy:
ACD-E-Iolite&Leaf

Faceted iolite dangling for a carved silver leaf, $119

ACD-E-BlueAqua&Volcano

Rough-hewn aquamarine stones suspended from sterling silver volcano beads — named for their lava-like texture, $119

ACD-E-PeridotLongWire

Faceted peridot and carved silver bead on a long (two inch; 57 mm); $119

ACD-E-Bees&Pearls

Gold vermeil bees look like they’re toting their own hive in the form of a pale pink pearl –  $129 – buy online

ACD-E-GreenCeleryChalcedony

Celery green chalcedony set in sterling silver surrounded by diamonds –  $419 – buy online

ACD-E-LondonBlue&LongWire

London blue topaz dangling from distinctive carved sterling silver beads, $179

Theodora inspired by 1930s mannequin

There has been no living with Theodora since she heard about a mannequin who was so famous in the 1930s that she made the cover of Life magazine.

Great. Now my model has a role model.

acd-pic-cynthia-mannequin

Cynthia, the star mannequin of the 1930s

Theodora got particularly excited when she learned that Cynthia, as this single-named celeb was known, was invited to the wedding of Wallis Simpson and Edward VIII, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor.

Now she has an eye (so to speak) on all the upcoming royal nuptials. And no one likes dressing for a posh wedding more than Theodora.

ACD-NL-GreyPearls&SmokeyQ

Inspired by Cynthia, her demands don’t end there. She wants to be featured more on the blog and in Instagram as part of her own “personal branding” campaign.

She wants to do more selfies with the clients, which is tricky since she lacks arms.

ACD-NL-Garnets-2

I fear that I may have created a monster. Good thing I’m too much of an introvert to act as her publicist.

But it does make me wonder what made Cynthia’s minders take a publicity stunt to such great lengths? Her inventor was trying to sell customers on these new oh-so-realistic mannequins and so he gave her a fake real life. She had a newspaper column and a radio show (despite her chronic laryngitis she was said to have been a good listener). And Saks even gave her a credit card!

What were they all thinking?

Maybe Cynthia was a nagger? Theodora certainly is. Which is why you will find her at my Oct. 25 and 26 trunk show at the Granville Island Hotel, angling for attention. She makes a good case that without her modelling, it’s hard to see how you can extend your own necklace wardrobe by layering single strands into scene-stealing statement necklaces. But I warned her that if she nags anyone to do selfies with her, she’s going home.

Really, I’m not sure how much I should indulge Theodora on this?

Then again, if Theodora is willing to take over my often-neglected social media, maybe I should just let her have the Instagram account?

ANNUAL FALL TRUNK SHOW

Granville Island Hotel

Friday, Oct. 25, 11 – 7

Saturday, Oct. 26, 10 – 5

My annual fall pop-up store is happening the same week as the Vancouver Writers Festival at Granville Island, so here’s a bonus for my fellow book lovers: if you bring a ticket from one of the events, you’ll get 10 per cent off anything you buy at that trunk show.

As always, the big fall trunk show is the one where I show a wide range of statement necklaces for party season and racks of one-of-a-kind earrings. You will also find a good selection of scarf pins and bracelets. My website carries only a fraction of the designs available.

I’m on vacation until Oct 2, and I’m sorry to report that my project of training Theodora to fill orders has been a fiasco. She’s a lovely model, but a lousy assistant.

ACD-NL-GreyPearls&SmokeyQ.JPG

So no website orders will be filled until I return. But if you’re in Vancouver you may want to wait a few weeks, until my big fall show, which is loaded with one-of-a-kind pieces.

FALL TRUNK SHOW OCT. 25 & 26

My biggest trunk show of the year is happening this year on Granville Island

GRANVILLE ISLAND HOTEL

Friday Oct. 25 — 11 a.m. to 7 p.m

Saturday, Oct. 26 — 10 a.m to 5 p.m.

My pop-up coincides with the Vancouver Writers Festival and I think we book-lovers should stick together. So I’m offering anyone who brings a ticket from an event 10 per cent off the items they buy at my show.

As always, Theodora will be present, and yes, she does pose for selfies. Just don’t let her try and charge you.

Part of the fun for me in doing a trunk show on Main Street is that it gives me a good excuse to visit shops and restaurants outside of my neighbourhood. And if you’re visiting my pop-up shop this week, I recommend you visit them too.

ACD-SM-MainShow

I open at 11 a.m. on Thursday and Friday, so if you’re dropping by midday, may I suggest you have lunch at Coco et Olive at Main & 22nd — the hot chicken sandwich is worth driving across town for.  If you’re arriving later in the day — I’m open until 7 p.m. — the French Table is just four blocks north of my trunk show at Little Mountain Shop.

I know many of you have a thing for beautiful stationery with clever sayings on it, so don’t miss The Regional Assembly of Text, near 24th. The shop has a vintage feel, not least because of all the typewriters decorating it. And who doesn’t need a tea towel with a map of Vancouver on it?

I can never get enough of independent bookshops and there are two near my trunk show. Book Warehouse on Main is just three blocks away from me, and is also dog friendly. And then there’s Carson Books, a secondhand bookstore just a few doors down. No relation, but obviously a kindred spirit.

Pulp Fiction on Main, is farther north, near Broadway, but since you’re already on Main, why not go a few extra blocks? (Yes, this is my rationale for hitting every independent bookstore on the street: when will I get over to Main next?)

At the top of my reading list: Esi Edugyan’s Washington Black, which just won the Giller Prize.

Need to supply yourself with greenery and flowers for parties, stocking stuffers for the green-of-thumb, or maybe sign-up up for a wreath-making workshop? The Flower Factory is just a block away and they have a lovely Instagram.

And I’m sure I’ll have a few more  Christmas shopping recommendations by the time my show is done. Hope to see you there:

Pop-up Shop, Nov. 20-29

This is a big step for my little business. I’m joining forces with more than a dozen Vancouver design and art businesses to do a pop-up shop for holiday shoppers, from November 20 to 29.

You’ll find us in the refurbished Mint Interiors building, at the entrance to Granville Market.

LOCAL: A Curated Pop-Up Shop
Nov. 20 to 29
1805 Fir St. (at W. 2nd Ave.)
Mon-Fri: 12 p.m. – 5:30 p.m
Sat-Sun: 10 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.

The shop is organized and curated by architect Tina Dhillon (L) and interior designer Brooke Hatfield, the duo behind Designers Collective, an interior design business with a twist. They also provide clients with design education through workshops and travel tours focusing on design. For a taste of what they do, here are their DIY videos.

ACD-pic-DesignersCollective

I’m both excited and terrified. What if nobody comes? What if everybody comes and I don’t have enough stock? So I’m trying to breathe slowly and think of this as just a really, really long trunk show for which I need to design some new pieces.

ACD-N-SuffragettePendant

THE LINE-UP

My partners in the pop-up shop include a range of Vancouver artists and artisans offering goods to decorate you and your home. They all do wonderful, original work or sell fine, high-quality goods that can be hard to come-by because small suppliers (like me) aren’t always easy to find.

With any luck, our 10-day pop-up shop will make it easier for you to discover new designers and artisans and find exactly what you’re looking for.

In the meantime, here’s a list of the Vancouver businesses that will be part of LOCAL business, along with links to their websites.

THE ARTISTS

Lauren Morris paints acrylics of landscapes, fruit, and flowers are just so refreshingly beautiful.

D

Ode to Summer, acrylic on canvas, 48 X 48, Lauren Morris

Tanja Gardner is an internationally trained artist who has been in Vancouver more than 20 years, and usually shows her paintings through the Ian Tan Gallery.

THE HOME LOVERS

Forest & Waves designs a host of home accessories with a local flair. I love their hand-printed linen tea towels, but I think they’re much too charming to dry dishes with. Better to hang them as kitchen art.

ACD-pic-LinenTowel

Forest & Waves, $23

Landon Dix works in wood to provide beautiful home accessories for every day living.

Brett Riekert a local furniture designer whose sleek pieces combine walnut, steel, and leather into sophisticated seating  inspired by Danish mid-century modern design.

Botany Living, which features locally-grown succulents in real life and on their gorgeous Instagram.

Gabriel Burke, who trained at Emily Carr, creates elegant ceramics for G Ceramic & Co. from her White Rock studio.

Joue Designs features pillows in luxurious linens and silks.

Milani brings organic cotton sheets, duvets, and accessories for children.

THE FASHIONISTAS

Lana Betty‘s delicate geometric designs are young and fun.

ACD-pic-LanaBetty

Lana Betty’s Cube Theory: 3D printed jewellery in steel, brass, or silver. $88.51

Sass Designs creates wrap bracelets from leather and beads that are inspired by the designs of the Sami people of Scandinavia (also known as Laplanders).

Cabyn delivers stylish fleece clothing.

Jai Style sells pendants and ceramics with an Asian influence.

LoverFighter is bringing tote bags, wallets, belts… distinctive leather accessories of all sorts.
