Since a pandemic has transported us back a century, I began thinking about how fashion lovers shopped in that era.

Cobblers, milliners, dressmakers, tailors, and jewellers often had ateliers — workshops-with-display shops — where folks like us would buy their clothes, by appointment.

It was both more social and a more private way to shop. So I think a trunk show by-appointment it is just the thing for this moment, as I’m beginning to think of 2020 as 1920 Redux: the year everything old is new again.

1920 Redux: A Trunk Show, by appointment

Saturday, July 25, 2020

Granville Island Hotel

10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

ACD-N-GreyPearls&amethysts

Four strands of lustrous grey pearls accented with eight tiny pink amethysts, $839

Here’s how it works

Send me a note — info@annecarsondesign.com — or call me — 604.619.9294 — and book a time that suits you, by the quarter hour. Any time from 10 a.m. to 4:15 p.m.

I will stagger the appointments to ensure that there are no more people than the volume of the room can support. But if you want to come at the last minute, on a whim, just call me. If the room is large enough to support another person or two, you’ll be welcome.

Safety first

I’ve heard you when you say that you want to be able to see the jewellery in person and feel its heft or try it on before investing in the necklaces, in particular. And I do think we have to get back to lives as normal as possible, under the circumstances.

I also appreciate all of you sending me those articles about how statement earrings and necklaces are the new office wardrobe essential for Zoom meetings. In order to explain why you must have a trunk show. (Very funny. And thanks for your support!)

acd-e-AquaDrop&tutu

Keep’em guessing in the Zoom meetings with a mismatched aquamarines. The large faceted stone on the left is a substantial 2.5 cm (one inch) and the complementary cluster of aquamarines is the same length, $199

But as a British Columbian who is very proud to see how we managed to limit that virus’s transmission by virtue of good citizenship and cooperation, I want to be careful that we do everything safely.

With that in mind, I’ve booked a large conference room in the hotel, with high ceilings and doors to the outdoors. I’ll keep those open so we have lots of lovely fresh air circulating.

I’ll have plenty of hand sanitizer on hand. And the hotel has washrooms where you can soap up those hands before and after handling the jewellery, should you wish to do that too. There will be disposable masks at the ready, in case you forget your own.

There’s also a new accessory to my wardrobe — a face shield. I’m just trying to decide what sort of necklace looks best with it?

ACD-N-Mask

At first I thought that the strand of silver-gold pyrite with a pendant stamped with the head of Bachhus the god of wine might be just the thing to go with PPE. The necklace is $659

But on second thought, maybe turquoise? It’s such a summery stone. This is a trio of necklaces, call me for the price.

Not ready for back to the future?

You can still shop online at my website. But many of the more than 80 earring designs in the July 25 trunk show are one-of-a-kind, which means I can’t put the pieces online. It’s just too cruel! I hate having to tell customers that I cannot replicate a piece.

So the one-of-a-kind pieces are the ones that go into the trunk shows.

But this year as a nod to The Plague, I’m posting pieces in the monthly newsletter — sign-up here — and on the blog.

Some of these pieces are available online, as indicated. If it’s not online you can call or email to buy:
ACD-E-Iolite&Leaf

ANNUAL FALL TRUNK SHOW

Granville Island Hotel

Friday, Oct. 25, 11 – 7

Saturday, Oct. 26, 10 – 5

My annual fall pop-up store is happening the same week as the Vancouver Writers Festival at Granville Island, so here’s a bonus for my fellow book lovers: if you bring a ticket from one of the events, you’ll get 10 per cent off anything you buy at that trunk show.

As always, the big fall trunk show is the one where I show a wide range of statement necklaces for party season and racks of one-of-a-kind earrings. You will also find a good selection of scarf pins and bracelets. My website carries only a fraction of the designs available.

Come to my show; explore Main

Part of the fun for me in doing a trunk show on Main Street is that it gives me a good excuse to visit shops and restaurants outside of my neighbourhood. And if you’re visiting my pop-up shop this week, I recommend you visit them too.

ACD-SM-MainShow

I open at 11 a.m. on Thursday and Friday, so if you’re dropping by midday, may I suggest you have lunch at Coco et Olive at Main & 22nd — the hot chicken sandwich is worth driving across town for.  If you’re arriving later in the day — I’m open until 7 p.m. — the French Table is just four blocks north of my trunk show at Little Mountain Shop.

I know many of you have a thing for beautiful stationery with clever sayings on it, so don’t miss The Regional Assembly of Text, near 24th. The shop has a vintage feel, not least because of all the typewriters decorating it. And who doesn’t need a tea towel with a map of Vancouver on it?

I can never get enough of independent bookshops and there are two near my trunk show. Book Warehouse on Main is just three blocks away from me, and is also dog friendly. And then there’s Carson Books, a secondhand bookstore just a few doors down. No relation, but obviously a kindred spirit.

Pulp Fiction on Main, is farther north, near Broadway, but since you’re already on Main, why not go a few extra blocks? (Yes, this is my rationale for hitting every independent bookstore on the street: when will I get over to Main next?)

At the top of my reading list: Esi Edugyan’s Washington Black, which just won the Giller Prize.

Need to supply yourself with greenery and flowers for parties, stocking stuffers for the green-of-thumb, or maybe sign-up up for a wreath-making workshop? The Flower Factory is just a block away and they have a lovely Instagram.

And I’m sure I’ll have a few more  Christmas shopping recommendations by the time my show is done. Hope to see you there:

November 21-23

4386 Main Street (near 28th)

Little Mountain Shop

Wednesday, 4 pm – 7 pm

Thursday and Friday, 11 am to 7 pm

Statement necklaces for every day

While I love to see my necklaces swan off to glamourous parties and fundraisers, that wasn’t why I began making them.

ACD-Laine2

I started designing unique pieces for myself as a way of elevating what I called my work uniform – some variation on dark jeans and a white shirt. I was one of those ironically named stay-at-home moms. Ironic, because of course I was never home. I was ferrying children around between school and activities. Running the endless errands that go into managing a family home. And running my own part-time photography business.

So I was looking for statement necklaces that would take me from 7 a.m. to midnight and make me feel I was dressed like a grown-up. I wanted real silver, real pearls, and real gemstones since I think plastic beads and crystals are for children playing dress-up.

ACD-N-Chains&Wings

And today, most of my customers choose my jewellery for the same reason I did: they want to give their work clothes a distinctive, personal look that will take them from that first breakfast meeting to an evening at the theatre.
