business travel, carry-on wardrobe, Steven Schelling

Stylist Steven Schelling has just the sort of packing strategy for a two-day business trip that I love: Dress up the basics with jewellery.

Using a black-and-white colour scheme, he manages to squeeze four looks into one carry-on bag. Two for travelling, one for the office, and one for evening.

I like his clothing choices. But for jewellery, I’d liven up the casual travelling look with layers of silver chains, including some whimsical bits and bobs.

For the black suit I’d want some pearls I could wear short or long.  Maybe in grey, with an amethyst accent.

Or possibly a soft pink.

For evening, I often want a little sparkle. I’m a sucker for pyrite.

flapper necklace, green amethyst, smokey quartz

I know a lot of you are green amethyst fans, and since the stones are rare I thought I’d let you know that I’ve managed to lay hands on a small supply of excellent quality gems. I’ve fashioned the faceted 20mm stones into the simple, elegant collar you see on Theodora.Image

These versatile grey-green stones are subtle enough to treat as neutral. They work with any outfit to bring some sparkle to your face. Or you can wear them with strong greens, blues, and turquoises to bring out the colour.

And the Downton Abbey fans will appreciate this long rope of faceted smokey topaz punctuated with faintly gold-flecked, rutilated quartz end pieces. You can wear it as Theodora does, in a choker to accent a low cut top. Or you can wear it as a flapper would have — long and tied in a knot. It works to dress up any simple outfit from a shift dress to a T-shirt.

Lady Mary’s necklace

Downton Abbey is airing in the UK this month, I just happen to know, because the publicity photos invariably prompt someone to request a necklace “just like Lady Mary’s.”

I adore the Edwardian era in jewellery and my ropes of semi-precious stones punctuated with silver and marcasite reflect that. So once Downton became a hit, clients made the connection and began requesting Downton-inspired pieces that riff on the show’s vintage jewellery.

Pyrite stones mixed with silver beads:

ImageI rarely do a knock-off since not everything works in the modern era. The cold, hard jet beads that were very popular then just don’t flatter today’s fashions or most complexions. Sometimes that flat black just sucks the colour right out of your face.

But I appreciate the design, so I work with dusky, silvery pyrite beads instead. They have all the sophistication of the black stones but they bring some light to the wearer’s face. And some sparkle. They work a treat to brighten-up that go-to little black dress.

They may not look exactly like the gems found in Lady Mary’s wardrobe, but I like to think that the 1920s fashionista herself would appreciate them. Especially since she’s going to be wearing a lot of black in Season 4. (Matthew’s exit still chokes me up.)

Sparkly, faceted black onyx, mix with silver beads:

Freshwater pearls in purple hues mixed with silver beads and finished with faceted lilac amethysts. Can be worn long or short.
